WHAT IS EXERCISE ONCOLOGY?

Exercise Oncology is an emerging field that focuses on the role of physical activity and exercise in the prevention and management of cancer. There is growing evidence that physical activity can have a positive impact on the quality of life, physical function, and even survival of cancer patients. Here are some reasons why Exercise Oncology is important in the healing of cancer patients:

  1. Improves Quality of Life: Cancer and its treatment can cause a range of physical and emotional symptoms that can impact a patient’s quality of life. Exercise has been shown to improve physical functioning, reduce fatigue, and improve mood, self-esteem, and overall well-being.

  2. Enhances Treatment Efficacy: Exercise has been shown to enhance the efficacy of cancer treatments, including chemotherapy and radiation therapy. It can improve the delivery of chemotherapy drugs to the tumor site, and also enhance the immune response to cancer cells.

  3. Reduces Risk of Recurrence: Physical activity has been shown to reduce the risk of cancer recurrence and improve survival rates in cancer patients. It can also reduce the risk of developing other chronic diseases, such as heart disease and diabetes, which are more common in cancer survivors.

  4. Supports Cardiovascular Health: Many cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy, can have negative effects on cardiovascular health. Exercise can improve cardiovascular function, which can help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease in cancer survivors.

Overall, Exercise Oncology is an important field that offers significant benefits for cancer patients. Exercise can improve quality of life, enhance treatment efficacy, reduce the risk of recurrence, and support cardiovascular health. As such, it should be considered an integral part of cancer care and management.
